Groats lose out in replay despite fightback
Published: 13 June, 2007
CONTIN's 5-3 win over Wick Groats on Saturday ensures Ross-shire has a six-strong contingent through to the last 16 of the Macleod IFA Highland Amateur Cup.
Caithness, with four, has the next biggest representation. That number will increase if Pentland United succeed with their appeal in the wake of their 1-0 defeat to Mid Lairgs United. The protest about the eligibility of a player is due to be tabled at a meeting on Sunday.
The Western Isles – the most successful area in the new millennium – has three teams left. There are two from Skye along with one Orkney side.
Sutherland's interest evaporated with Brora Wanderers' 3-1 defeat at Kyleakin in one of Saturday's three second-round replays.
Groats just came up short in their rematch in Contin after the 1-1 draw in Wick the previous Saturday. They were not at the races in the first period when the home side capitalised on, at times, schoolboy defending. After adding to an early breakthrough, Contin grabbed a third just before the break.
A half-time rollicking by Groats player/manager Stewart Ross had the desired effect. They got one back when Gavin Sinclair and Ross combined to set up a tap-in for Kyle Ross.
A second from Andrew Cumming, when he netted at the second attempt after a surge down the right, put them right back in the fray. But sloppy defending saw them concede again midway through the second half.
Groats fought back and again reduced the leeway to one when a Cumming effort came back off the keeper and Kyle Ross buried the rebound.
Groats had a couple of half-chances to level before Contin scored again a couple of minutes from full-time to clinch the tie. Right at the death, Martin Sutherland of Groats was red-carded for a late tackle.
In the other replay, Avoch extended their defence of the cup with a 5-2 victory at home to Kirkwall Thorfinn.
Third-round ties (to be played on Saturday, June 23): Contin v Culbokie; Dingwall Thistle v Dunvegan; Dounby Athletic v Gairloch Aultbea United; John O'Groats v Kyleakin; Lochs v Wick Thistle; Stornoway Athletic v Mid Lairgs United; Thurso Swifts v Avoch; Wick Rovers v Point.
