Antarctic stay in contention as Celts get rub of green
Published: 28 February, 2007
ANTARCTIC strengthened their position near the top of the second division of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League with a 3-0 victory over fellow title challengers Staxigoe.
The goals came from Colin McKiddie (2) and veteran Colin MacLeod but the scoreline wasn't really a true reflection of how the match went, as it could be argued that Staxigoe were very unlucky at times. However, Antarctic have always been among the fav-ourites for promotion this season and they showed exactly why they are contenders as their mixture of youth and experience continues to pay dividends.
Wick Celtic thought they had slipped up when they could only draw 2-2 with their "Old Firm" rivals, Thurso Rangers. However, they got the rub of the green as they were awarded a 3-0 win due to the Gers fielding an ineligible player. This leaves Celtic firmly in pole position but they can't afford any slip-ups as Staxigoe and Antarctic are breathing down their necks.
Top Joe's and Sharks shared the points in a six-goal thriller.
Stephen MacDonald opened the scoring for Joe's when he got on the end of a sweeping move to hit the ball high into the net. Sharks levelled when Kris Smith latched on to a cross and thundered the ball low into the net, but MacDonald got his second of the night to restore his team's lead.
Sharks equalised again within a minute, this time courtesy of a Chris Maythingy thunderbolt from the edge of the area, and they took the lead for the first time when Jamie McMahon was left unmarked at the far post and he had the simplest of tasks to divert the ball into the net. Joe's tied it up at 3-3 with a cool finish from Will Smith.
Graham Scollay gave RG's a 1-0 half-time lead against JGC and Ricky Flowerday added a second. JGC had numerous chances to score but didn't do so until the 40th minute.
Seaview eventually found some winning form when they defeated Junior Swifts 3-1.
Stuart Duffy grabbed a quick brace for Seaview as they swept forward at every opportunity and Gavin Shearer fired home their third. The Juniors refused to give up and were rewarded when trialist Mark Norburn capped a fine game with a stunning strike from the edge of the box.
Young Guns were 3-1 victors over Strokes in a rearranged first division fixture.
Guns' Scott Mackenzie scored with an unstoppable shot from an acute angle, and Shane McGinley and Terry Cannop were also on target. Strokes' reply came from Darren Mackay with a terrific left-foot drive.
