Lybster suffer a Tongue-lashing
Published: 29 October, 2008
DESPITE very blustery conditions last Thursday, there was plenty of attractive football on the opening night of second division fixtures in this season's Caithness amateur sevens league.
Tongue United swept to a convincing 7-2 victory over Lybster. Jason Mackay in particular seemed to relish the conditions and put Tongue ahead before further goals from Marc Keith and Harris Mackay made it 3-0 at the break.
The second half saw Lybster stage a brief comeback, with Graham Sutherland grabbing a quick brace, but Tongue restored their two-goal advantage when a wind-assisted clearance by their keeper Alan Mowat sailed into the Lybster net.
Jason Mackay completed his hat-trick with two well-taken goals in the space of a minute to make it 6-2, and David Keith completed the scoring after some fancy footwork.
Ashes lost out 3-1 to new boys Top Joe's Whites in a near-gale that saw the goalposts blown over on a couple of occasions.
Adam Sutherland opened the scoring for TJ Whites after a quarter of an hour with a shot that squeezed between the advancing keeper and the near post.
After the break, keeper Luke Budge worked hard to keep Ashes in the game but TJ Whites doubled their lead midway through the half courtesy of Steven Johns.
Ashes fought to get themselves back into the game and they reduced the deficit when a piece of individual skill by Scott Mackay created a chance for him to fire home from just outside the box.
Chris Smith, the TJ Whites keeper, took a wind-assisted pot shot from midway inside his own half. Luckily for Ashes his aim was marginally out and the ball ricocheted off the inside of a post.
Ross MacKinnon wrapped up the points for TJ Whites with a minute to go.
Carbon United and Blackstairs, two new recruits from Wick, lined up against each other and shared the points in a fairly even encounter.
Blackstairs' Dave Taylor opened the scoring after 20 minutes with a driven shot through a ruck of players.
Both teams had adopted a tight marking policy – indeed at times the marking was a bit too close. When Carbon United's Dougie Mackay was upended in the box, referee Bob Wheatcroft had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Alan Sutherland converted the penalty to square the match at 1-1.
Top Joe's defeated Sharks 3-2 in a keenly-contested encounter.
Sharks, resplendent in their new blue strip, scored with their first attack courtesy of a drive from Kenneth McElroy from the corner of the box.
The contest settled into a midfield battle with very few attempts on goal, and the first half finished with Sharks holding on to their 1-0 advantage.
After the restart Joe's upped the tempo and got themselves level when Kevin Cowie collected a pass with his back to goal, turned and fired the ball home in almost the one movement.
Donnie Sinclair, who has returned to the Joe's ranks from self-imposed exile, got his first of the season with a well-placed finish to put his side 2-1 in front.
Sharks were soon level again, Willie Miller setting up Steven Lowe to score at the back post, but Cowie forced home his second of the evening to secure all three points for Joe's.
The last game of the night saw Wick Thistle, with an array of experienced County League players, taking on a young Junior Acks side.
When Terence Cannop put the Jags ahead early on it looked as though the floodgates may open, but the Acks had other ideas and carved out several opportunities.
Paul Wares and Lee Mackay both spurned glorious chances, and only a dubious sliding tackle from Thistle's Chris Gunn in the last minute denied the youngsters a deserved share of the points.
On this display the Junior Acks look capable of making a big impression.
