Antarctic put on a classy show to move above RG's
Published: 29 December, 2006
IN-FORM Antarctic outclassed RG's in the Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League last Thursday night, winning 5-1 to move above their opponents in the second division table.
Greg Macleod opened the scoring when he received a defence-splitting pass from Colin McKiddie and belted the ball into the net. McKiddie smashed home a free kick to double their advantage and on the stroke of half-time Dougie Gunn added a third when he was left unmarked at the back post and applied a clinical finish.
Just after the restart RG's pulled one back through Alan Munro when he sent the keeper the wrong way with an adept side-footed shot.
Antarctic restored their three-goal advantage almost immediately, though, with Gunn producing a fantastic finish after luring the keeper off his line. With a minute remaining, McKiddie also claimed his second of the night with an unstoppable 20-yard shot.
Staxigoe remain on course for a tilt at the title but how they managed to beat Seaview 1-0 is anyone's guess. Seaview played their best football of the season so far – but, with Staxigoe keeper Colin Smith in outstanding form and the post and crossbar not in their favour, they emerged with nothing.
The goal came when Seaview, having narrowly missed a golden opportunity, were caught by a swift counter-attack and Graham MacNab gave Staxigoe their Christmas bonus.
Adam Sutherland struck twice for Thurso Rangers in their 4-1 victory over Top Joe's.
After a fairly even start, the Gers made the breakthrough midway through the first half.
Steven Johns found himself free on the right side and fired in a powerful cross-cum-shot that Sutherland met well, driving the ball goalward. Sutherland's effort rebounded off the back post and he netted at the second attempt.
Joe's upped the tempo and Andrew Cameron was unlucky to see his shot skim the crossbar.
After that let-off, the Gers gradually took control and Kyle Mackay converted a good cross from the wing to make it 2-0. Johns increased their lead when he found himself well positioned at the back post to push the ball home from close range.
Top Joe's pulled one back when Steven MacDonald cleverly allowed the ball to bounce over his marker's head before skipping past him and firing home an accurate shot.
But the Gers kept up the pressure and Sutherland completed the scoring with a neat finish from just inside the box.
An under-strength Sharks side defeated Junior Swifts 2-0 with a goal in each half.
Sharks started well, with Kenny MacAlpine pulling the strings in midfield, and Chris Smith was unlucky to see a lob from 15 yards drop onto the top of the net after he had ghosted past his marker.
Adrian Forbes made the breakthrough with a dipping shot from around 20 yards and he turned provider for the second, beating a couple of opponents and delivering an inch-perfect pass to Jamie McMahon who made no mistake from the edge of the box.
Naver and JGC played out a goalless draw in the night's other match.
