One-way traffic as Pentland stay top
Published: 15 December, 2006
PENTLAND'S 8-2 victory over the Young Guns ensures they retain top spot in Division One of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League while pushing the Guns into the relegation zone.
It was virtually one-way traffic after Pentland opened the scoring with a fine strike by Ewan Scott. Further goals from Gary Mackay, Michael Petrie and Darren Mackay had them on easy street by half-time.
Lee Sutherland struck twice soon after the break to make it 6-0, then the Guns momentarily came to life with two goals in as many minutes from John McGill and Scott Mackenzie.
The league leaders responded with a double from golden boot leader Andrew Richardson in the final moments to complete the scoring.
Championship challengers Strokes ran out 4-2 winners in a keenly-fought encounter with bottom-placed Ashes.
Ian Coghill opened the scoring for Strokes midway through the first half with a well-placed shot from just inside the box, and Ashes keeper Mark Mackenzie had to pull off a number of good saves to keep his team in contention.
With half-time approaching, a neat three-pass combination out of defence saw Scott Mac-lean skip past his marker to equalise with a left-foot shot.
Early in the second period Strokes restored their lead courtesy of Bobby Thorburn but Ashes' hard work was rewarded when Mark Hutcheon slipped his marker and fired in a left-foot drive to make it 2-2.
Thorburn got his second and Strokes' third and Paul MacDonald made the points safe.
A full-strength Castletown can have no complaints after losing 6-2 to an improving Lybster side.
Castletown scored twice in the first half through Steve Morris and Murray Mackay and must have thought the game was over as a contest. But Lybster regrouped and they dominated the second half, with Stephen Sutherland, Bobby Gunn (2) and a quick-fire hat-trick from Jimmy Budge earning an impressive victory.
The under-strength Swifts lost out 4-3 to a Halkirk team that looked hungry for the points.
Halkirk's Stuart Gray struck twice in the first half but goals from Anson Robertson and Ian Elder for Swifts ensured it was all square at the break.
After the village side had restored their lead through the hard-working David Blackwood, John Holmes netted a penalty to make it 3-3.
Late on Halkirk secured the points with a powerful effort from Ewan McElroy.
Shadwell's up-and-down season continued when they lost 2-1 to John O'Groats.
A rocket shot by Callum Campbell had Groats ahead at the interval and David Green drove home a second from the edge of the box before the unmarked Alan Sutherland reduced the deficit in the dying seconds.
First division fixtures for matchday 15 – Monday, December 18: Thurso Comm v Swifts (6.30); Castletown v Shadwell (6.30); Strokes v Young Guns (7.30); Halkirk v Ashes (7.30); John O'Groats v Pentland (8.30). Free week – Lybster.
