Swifts walking in a Winter Wann-derland after hat-trick
Published: 13 December, 2006
LIAM Wann hit another treble as the Junior Swifts secured their second consecutive victory in Division Two of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League, defeating JGC 4-1 in a very entertaining encounter.
The juniors' line-up included the vastly experienced Kevin Warner at the back and he certainly played his part, coaxing and cajoling his young team-mates to play to the best of their ability.
Wann opened the scoring when he worked himself clear of his marker to convert from the edge of the box. JGC got themselves level when Chris Cowie fired the ball into the roof of the net from close range but the impressive Wann grabbed his second of the evening to make it 2-1 at half-time.
Early in the second half a double nutmeg by Wann created a chance for Steven Miller, who duly extended the lead, and Wann completed the scoring to register his second hat-trick in successive games.
RG's suffered a setback in their title bid when they were held to a 1-1 draw by a much-improved Naver United.
After a goalless first half, the match sprang to life when Dean Salim got through on the blind side of Naver's defence and hit a powerful shot low into the corner of the net.
Naver responded by throwing everyone forward in search of the equaliser and eventually their efforts were rewarded, albeit through an own goal when RG's Ricky Flowerday headed the ball past his keeper.
Antarctic Thistle are well placed at the head of the chasing pack and they strengthened their position with a 4-0 win against Top Joe's.
In-form Antarctic took the lead in five minutes when James Risbridger headed the ball in off a post. Antarctic doubled their tally a couple of minutes later when Colin Macleod fired in a shot that squirmed under goalkeeper Ed Miller.
Antarctic piled on the pressure as the half progressed and at times it looked as if they had an extra man on the field. Colin McKiddie made it 3-0 lead just before the break, with a second-half strike by Graham Carle rounding off the scoring.
Wick Celtic remain in pole position after an unconvincing victory over Sharks.
The Sharks were in cracking form throughout the first half and with a bit of luck could have been three up.
To be fair to the Celts, they did create numerous chances but were guilty of some woeful finishing at this stage of the game.
As it was, Sharks were leading by Adrian Forbes's first-half strike as the game entered its last 10 minutes.
Then, after several attempts at goal, Gary MacGregor finally managed to hit the net for the Celts with a thunderous shot.
The match then turned into a nightmare for the luckless Sharks as Darren Sheppard scored twice in the last three minutes to make the final score 3-1.
Seaview recorded a fine 3-1 win against Thurso Rangers in the last match of the evening.
Seaview led 2-0 at half-time, courtesy of two fine strikes from Gavin Shearer, and they seemed to be coasting.
The Gers pulled one back through Steven Johns but Seaview lifted their game and Greg Gunn smashed the ball into the net to make sure of the points.
Second division fixtures for matchday 14 – Thursday, December 14: JGC v Seaview (6.30); Top Joe's v RG's (6.30); Antarctic Thistle v Wick Celtic (7.30); Staxigoe United v Junior Swifts (7.30); Thurso Rangers v Naver United (8.30). Free week – Sharks.
