Swanson hits four as Comm get the chop - From JOG Journal website
Published: 08 December, 2006
GRAHAM Swanson scored four terrific goals this week as Halkirk ran out 5-1 winners over Thurso Comm in the first division of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League.
From a spectator's point of view the game was notable for the leniency of the referee, who time after time failed to punish offenders for some fierce tackling that the ex-Chelsea stalwart Ron "Chopper" Harris would have been proud of.
To the onlooker it was shaping up to be a contest that would be decided by the best of three falls or a submission, and there was idle speculation that Mick McManus was warming up in the changing room.
Comm's Willie Steven seemed to receive more than his fair share of attention throughout the match but to his credit he didn't allow this to affect his game and he eventually got on the scoresheet. Halkirk's Russell Bain made it 5-1 near the end.
Earlier, Shadwell had kept their slim title hopes alive by defeating the Young Guns 2-1 in a game of very few chances.
The deadlock was broken towards the end of the first half following a controversial penalty decision when Shadwell's Sid Potter tumbled to the ground. The spot-kick was converted by Alan Sutherland.
Young Guns hit back just after the restart when youngster Shane McGinley scored after some fine build-up play but Sutherland secured the points with his second of the evening.
Strokes maintained their assault on the title with an emphatic 4-1 win over Swifts.
Malky Ness, the Swifts keeper, pulled off a number of good saves before Bobby Thorburn pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring. After the break Thorburn finished off a clever four-pass combination for his second, and Strokes extended their lead further with a double from Sean Swanson. John Holmes got a late consolation goal for Swifts.
League leaders Pentland romped to a 10-1 victory over a young Ashes side who are rooted to the bottom of the table.
In a very one-sided affair, three goals each from Ewan Scott and Andrew Richardson and another by Darren Mackay put Pentland 7-0 up before Ashes got on the scoresheet courtesy of Gary Mackay's own goal. Gary Mackay made amends by firing home Pentland's eighth, then Richardson took his tally to four before Lee Sutherland rounded off the scoring.
Lybster defeated John O'Groats 5-4 in an entertaining match. Grant Budge's opener was cancelled out by Groats' Matthew Mackay but Bobby Gunn restored Lybster's advantage. Then came an amazing five-minute spell in which Lybster scored three times, Budge netting his second before Hasheem Ahmed added a quick double.
Then it was John O'Groats' turn to produce an equally remarkable three-goal burst through David Green and Derek Munro (2), but Lybster held on.
First division fixtures for Monday, December 11: Strokes v Ashes (6.30); Castletown v Lybster (6.30); Halkirk v Swifts (7.30); Pentland v Young Guns (7.30); Shadwell v John O'Groats (8.30). Free week – Thurso Comm.
