Pentland joint top after runaway win
Published: 17 November, 2006
PENTLAND had a runaway 8-1 victory over Strokes this week to go joint top with Castletown in the first division of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League.
Golden boot leader Andrew Richardson helped himself to a hat-trick, his first being the pick of the bunch as he pulled two defenders wide and, from a near-impossible angle, fired the ball into the far bottom corner of the net.
Not to be outdone, youngster Ewan Scott also claimed a hat-trick, his third being very similar to Richardson's angled goal.
Michael Petrie and Darryn Mackay were also on target before Alex MacDonald managed a consolation goal for Strokes.
Shadwell, who boast the best defensive record in the division, lost 1-0 to Halkirk with Stuart Gray getting the all-important goal after only eight minutes.
Swifts, undefeated since September, kept the momentum going by beating Lybster 3-1. Goals from Mo Morrison, Derek Campbell and John Holmes had Swifts in the comfort zone before Graham Sutherland pulled one back for the villagers.
Young Guns could not repeat their fine display from last week and Castletown trounced them 12-3. However, it's fair to say that Young Guns were badly affected by call-offs.
Castletown, who themselves were recently hammered 14-3, find themselves joint leaders of the first division on merit. Six of the best from Steven Morris, a hat-trick for Chris Nicolson, a brace for Gary Calder and a solo effort by David McGill ensured an emphatic victory for the village side.
Young Guns replied with two ferocious free kicks from Chris Gunn and a Terry Cannop strike.
The veterans of Thurso Comm defeated John O'Groats 5-1 after falling behind to an early goal from Mark Munro. Jocky Begg, back after injury, grabbed a hat-trick for the Comm, with Peter MacGregor scoring with a long-range shot and Derek Richardson adding the fifth with a powerful drive.
Comm keeper Callum Angus pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Groats.
Staxigoe ran out 8-3 winners against Thurso Rangers in a rearranged second division fixture. Young Graham MacNab helped himself to a hat-trick and his twin brother Grant also found the net with a fine strike.
Ryan Robertson (2), Peter Niwa and Mark Mackay wrapped up the scoring for Staxigoe, with Alyn Gunn, Ross Mackinnon and Ben Murray on the scoresheet for the Gers.
