Quick-fire double earns Castletown share of points
Published: 03 November, 2006
SWIFTS and Castletown fought out a 4-4 draw this week in the first division of Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League.
Swifts were first to show, with Fraser Swanson pulling off a point-blank save to deny John Holmes, but it was Gary Calder who opened the scoring for Castletown.
Pedro MacDonald equalised with a volley from just outside the box, then Holmes drifted past two Castletown players to give Swifts a 2-1 lead. Castletown worked away and their efforts were rewarded when Derek Shearer squared the match with a well-taken goal, only for Anson Robertson to run the length of the park and restore Swifts' advantage.
Soon after the restart Roddy Harper added another to put Swifts 4-2 up but Castletown scored twice in a minute through Murray Mackay and Stev-en Morris and it finished all square.
A much-improved John O'Groats side ran out 2-1 winners against a very lacklustre Ashes, who could not recapture the form they displayed in their previous outing.
Sean Stewart gave Groats the lead but Ashes hit back midway through the second half after momentarily bursting into life. Steven O'Brien glided down the left flank and delivered a well-placed shot only to see it deflected by the keeper into the path of David Stockan, who gratefully accepted the plaudits of his team-mates when he converted from close range.
Derek Munro struck the winner for John O'Groats.
Pentland took on a very impressive Shadwell and can be pleased to have gained a point, especially as they were minus a couple of regulars.
Referee John Arrowsmith controversially chalked off what appeared to be a perfectly good goal when he deemed the ball not in play after Pentland's keeper had placed the ball on the ground and Shadwell's Johnny Mackay simply tucked it into the net.
Pentland found it difficult to cope with the onslaught from Shadwell but they held out and the match finished goalless.
Young Guns got off to the perfect start against Comm when Chris Gunn sidestepped a defender and hit a ferocious shot into the net. Guns then went to pieces defensively and were punished when Jocky Begg netted with a left-foot pile-driver.
Within a minute Willie Steven had the Comm 2-1 in front when he blasted home from just outside the box. Steven then tucked away his second of the evening to give the Comm a 3-1 lead – he was left with a simple tap-in after Begg had done the spadework.
Derek Manson added another for the Comm after being set up by the hard-working Andy Bain. Young Guns improved in the last 10 minutes and their efforts were rewarded when veteran Richie MacDougall collected a through ball from Kevin Alexander, left the Comm defence in his wake, and curled it into the top left-hand corner.
Strokes defeated Lybster 6-1 in a one-sided encounter. Strokes were 2-0 up within a minute when Stevie Muir's opener was quickly followed by a typical Paul McDonald strike. McDonald's second of the evening was followed by a further three goals in a 10-minute spell courtesy of Chris Foy, Sean Swanson and Bobby Thorburn. Lybster pulled one back in the dying seconds when Bobby Gunn caught the defence napping and blasted the ball into the net.
Fixtures for matchday nine – Monday,
November 6: Castletown v Ashes (6.30); Shadwell v Strokes (6.30); Thurso Comm v Pentland (7.30); Lybster v Halkirk (7.30); John O'Groats v Young Guns (8.30). Free week – Swifts.
