Castletown floored by Thorburn's eightsome reel
Published: 20 October, 2006
THIS week's first division match between Strokes and Castletown turned out to be an amazing 17-goal thriller – equalling the Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League scoring record set just three weeks before.
After going behind early on, Strokes dominated the match and ran out easy winners by 14-3. Bobby Thorburn put in a fine individual performance with eight goals to boost his chances of winning this season's golden boot award.
Castletown opened the scoring in five minutes but it took less than a minute for Thorburn to level with a powerful shot from 25 yards. Sixty seconds later Bobby had Strokes in front, turning two defenders and wrong-footing the keeper.
A goal by Willie Calder and a quick double from Paul MacDonald took the score to 5-1. Castletown reduced the deficit when Gary Calder netted, but Thorburn struck again to complete his hat-trick with seconds of the first half remaining.
Strokes attacked relentlessly in the second half, with MacDonald completing his hat-trick and Thorburn scoring five more.
Despy Mackay got his just rewards for his hard work when he scored the 13th for Strokes. Robert McGee added Castletown's third before Willie Calder got the final touch on a net-bound Thorburn shot to round off the scoring.
A young and weakened Ashes lost 10-4 to the experienced Comm side.
Ashes got off to a good start and in eight minutes Sean Trueman turned his marker brilliantly to fire in a left-foot shot that rattled off the bar, with Graham Taylor reacting first to net the opener.
Two minutes later Ashes extended their lead when Hamish Coghill slotted the ball home.
Andy Bain pulled one back for Comm midway through the half, only for Ashes to make it 3-1 when a strike on goal was deflected into the Comm net.
Within seconds of the restart Peter MacGregor produced some fancy footwork to create an opening and slip the ball home for the Comm's second.
Comm then made their experience tell, taking a stranglehold of the game and giving Ashes a lesson in clinical finishing. Goals by Bain, Falconer (3), Manson (2) and Begg (2) took Comm to double figures before Ashes pulled one back late on through Shane McGinley.
Swifts defeated Young Guns 8-0 but the result could have been very different if Young Guns hadn't been reduced to six men in the first few minutes.
Terry Cannop thought he had given Young Guns the lead but his effort was chalked off when the referee penalised him for backing into a defender. Within a minute Cannop was sent off after he retaliated to a kick from an opponent.
Swifts went on to rattle in eight without reply, with John Holmes, Derek Campbell, Alan Mackenzie, Paul MacDonald, James Mackay and Danny Riddell all getting one apiece and Mo Morrison grabbing a brace.
Halkirk put in a workmanlike performance to defeat John O'Groats 7-0. Halkirk showed plenty of hard graft and commitment, underlining how serious their title challenge will be this season.
Doubles from both Steven Elder and Russell Bain, followed by goals from Kevin Sutherland, Graham Swanson and Stuart Gray, wrapped up the points for Halkirk.
Bain's second of the night came in bizarre fashion. He decided to tie his laces inside the Groats penalty area and, when a speculative cross came into the box, it bounced off Bain's head into the net.
Russell was withdrawn from the fray and it was fully five minutes before he realised he had scored.
First division fixtures for matchday seven (Monday, October 23): Young Guns v Ashes (6.30); Thurso Comm v Shadwell (6.30); Castletown v Halkirk (7.30); John O'Groats v Swifts (7.30); Pentland v Lybster (8.30). Free week – Strokes.
