High-scoring Castletown finish the season in style - From JOG Journal website
Published: 18 August, 2006
CASTLETOWN completed their John O’Groat Journal County League first division campaign on a high with two big wins away from home.
The 12 goals they cracked in without reply versus Acks and Rovers ensured Ian MacDonald’s men finished as the league’s top-scoring side.
Acks’ inglorious campaign ended with an 8-0 trouncing by Castletown at Ormlie.
Castletown sweeper Graham MacDonald relished a return to his former midfield role. He registered his first two goals of the season, the second a marvellous 25-yard top-corner strike.
Steven Morris was the chief goal-getter with three, while Chris Sutherland and Pher Nicolson were also on target. Mark O’Brien completed Acks’ miserable night by registering an own goal.
Castletown went on to record a 4-0 win against Rovers in Wick on Monday night.
Rovers manager Sanders Harper was pressed into service to make up the numbers for his seriously-depleted outfit. The manager was to have a torrid evening, almost scoring an own goal and later conceding a penalty.
Castletown went ahead after eight minutes when Steven Morris slotted in from close range after young keeper Craig Thomson had saved the initial shot. Peter Niwa missed a decent chance for Rovers before Morris grabbed his second after 18 minutes.
Thomson saved his manager’s bacon on 35 minutes when he acrobatically dived to his left to keep out his goal-bound touch.
But the 15-year-old was powerless to prevent Morris completing his hat-trick two minutes before the break when he latched on to a through ball.
Five minutes after the interval, Thomson again distinguished himself after Harper upended Greg Macleod in the box and the keeper flung himself to get to Stuart Florence’s spot-kick.
Castletown’s fourth came after 65 minutes with a stylish finish from Scott Manson.
Thomson pulled off a couple of good stops late on to prevent further damage.
Three County League sides have been docked points for failing to fulfil scheduled fixtures. Caithness AFA took the action against Acks, Workshops and Mid County at its end-of-season meeting last Thursday.
This year’s MacLeod IFA Highland Amateur Cup final is to be an all-Black Isle affair. It follows Fortrose’s 3-2 eclipse of Lochs in Saturday’s second semi at Culbokie.
Fortrose, who have knocked out Rovers, Acks and Castletown, now meet near neighbours Avoch in the final at Victoria Park, Dingwall, on August 26.
The defeat for Lewis pair Lochs and Stornoway Athletic at the penultimate stage means the cup will have a mainland winner for the first time since Pentland United’s success in 2002. Since then, the trophy has been won by Lochs in 2003 and 2005 and Back in 2004.
