Wick goal by Shane Sutherland

SS Scorrie sinks Cove 14-Apr-2007
For the second week running Shane Sutherland netted the only goal of the game to ensure that Wick Academy collected all three points and moved closer not only to the 30 point mark but also to the teams above them.
In the 13th minute the first chance of the game saw Wicks Martin Gunn cross from the right which picked out Craig Shearers late run into the box but his looping header went over the bar from 12 yards out. Ten minutes later a Martin Gunn free kick 35 yards out was fired goal wards however Pirie saved comfortably low down.
The goal came ten minutes before half time. Gary Weir sent a through ball into the path of Shane Sutherland and he clinically shot low inside Piries right hand post from 14 yards.
This seemed to spark a greater level of resistance from the visitors and Keith Robertson had a 20 yard had low shot which was saved easily by James More.
HFL select player Clark Bain then had a 25 yard drive through a ruck of Wick players but it too was comfortably saved by James More who was looking for a second successive clean sheet.
In the 53rd minutes the Scorries came close to doubling their advantage. Craig Shearer played a square pass to Martin Gunn 20 yards out and his first time driven shot was saved by Pirie at full length at his left hand post.
Minutes later a David Cowie cross into the box found Gary Weir at the edge of the box; he played it into the path of Shane Sutherland 18 yards out and his fierce left foot drive was deflected wide for a corner.
It was clear Wick wanted to give themselves a cushion and when Gary Weir received a pass from Martin Gunn, his first time 18 yard shot was saved well by Pirie
The chances began to dry up quicker than the ground has in recent weeks and the fans had to wait until the dying moments for any further efforts of note.
A free kick Gary Farquhar 25 yards out was lofted over the defence and Gary Weirs left foot shot on the turn was fantastically parried by Ivor Pirie who thanked his defenders for clearing the ball to safety.
This win moves Wick to within four points of Rothes and five of Clach with the Scorries still having three games remaining in contrast with the two above them who have already completed their campaign. By contrast Cove will have to battle hard to gain 6th place with Nairn two clear of them with both teams having two games still to play.
