Castletown crash out of contest - from JOG Journal website
Published: 02 August, 2006
CASTLETOWN'S exit from the MacLeod IFA Highland Amateur Cup on Saturday leaves Caithness unrepresented at the semi-final of the tourney. An under-strength village outfit went down 3-0 in their replay away to Fortrose.
Missing a clutch of key players from the 1-1 draw in the first tussle, the trip to the Black Isle was always going to be a tough proposition. So it proved with the visitors having few complaints about the outcome.
Manager Ian MacDonald was, however, less than impressed by the uneven playing surface which he believed was dangerous in parts.
He was also fizzing about the decision by the officials to give a penalty against his side early in the second half when he claimed a Fortrose attacker tripped himself in the box.
Fortrose had led at the interval by a headed goal and the conversion of the spot-kick effectively ended the contest. They grabbed a third and would have added to their tally but for several excellent stops by keeper Asa Sinclair.
Caithness has had the most success in the blue riband trophy, with 11 of the 27 triumphs enjoyed by county league sides.
But the cupboard has been bare since Pentland United’s fifth win in 2002.
The Western Isles, victors on eight occasions, look a good bet to close the gap by extending their winning sequence to four.
Holders Lochs play Fortrose on August 12 with the first semi going ahead on Saturday when Stornoway Athletic take on Avoch at Grant Street Park, Inverness.
