Wick delighted with the late late show 23-Dec-2006
Two goals in the last few minutes of the game saw Wick complete a remarkable comeback win over a Forres Mechanics side which hit the woodwork three times in the first half and at one stage were two goals to the good.
The visitors were the first to try their luck, and in this case it was out not just once but three times in the space of 60 seconds. In the ninth minute Neil Whyte got on the end of a cross ahead of Wick keeper James More to sent a header crashing off the post.
The clearance from the Wick defence only found Ryan Green at the edge of the box and his fierce right foot shot was turned around the post. From the corner Neil Whytes first time shot came back off the post once again suggesting it was not going to be the wirey midfielders day.
Halfway through the half Niall Calders throughball sent Charlie Brown racing clear but as he was pulling the trigger Andrew Macleod got back and put enough pressure on to make the striker scuff his shot when the goal seemed inevitable.
Wicks first chance arrived when Shane Sutherland played a tremendous throughball to Richard Macadie who rounded Taylor and fired goalwardw but Justin Rodgers had raced back and cleared the ball off the line
Ten minutes before the break Forres took the lead when a Chris Ross throughball put Ryan Green through and he calmly placed a left foot shot under James More and into the net from fourteen yards.
Shortly after that Neil Whyte collected the ball halfway into the Wick half and let fly with a thirty yard thunderbolt which came crashing off the bar to complete the hat-trick off the woodwork. Both posts hit and the crossbar, is that what they call the perfect woodwork treble?
Seven minutes before the break Richard Macadie lifted a ball over the top of the Forres defence and Davie Cowie ran on before firing a right foot shot over the keepers bar as the Scorries looked to drag themselves level before the break but it was not to be and that was confounded when no penalty was awarded when Davie Cowie went down under the challenge of Robbie Taylor.
A minute into the second half Justin Rodgers got to the byeline and crossed the ball low and Charlie Brown forced it home from three yards out. Forres were two goals up and must have felt the game was theirs
However in the 52nd minute the comeback began Neil Trails cross from the left wasnt dealt with and Shane Sutherland pounced to poke the ball inside Robbie Taylors right hand post from six yards.
This inspired the Scorries and a mazy from Davie Mowat was only denied by a last ditch saving tackle by Chris Ross. Davie Cowie then headed the ball wide from four yards out with the goal at his mercy in the 73rd minute as the chances began to go abegging. Were the goals to come? You betcha
In the 89 minutes a cross in from the right by Shaun Sinclair was dropped by Robbie Taylor and it fell to Richard Macadie who squared it for Gary Weir who fired into the empty net from twelve yards out
Two minutes into injury time they grabbed a winner when Stuart Ross made and interception on the left and slipped it inside to Richard Macadie and he fired a 16 yarder inside the keepers left hand post to seal a late late victory to pull Wick to within two points of the Can Cans
