Wick Academy 0 v Inverness Clachnacuddin 2 at Harmsworth Park, Wick - 3.00 p.m
report from www.highlandleague.net
Wick stung by early and late strikes 30-Sep-2006
An early goal and a late goal was enough to give Clachnacuddin the points at Harmsworth Park avenging their North Cup defeat in what was the first match of the 2006-2007 campaign.
The visitors took a 3rd minute lead with their first attack of the game. Blair Lawrie ran on to a pass from Alex Bone and cleverly steered the ball into the net from ten yards out.
Bone nearly doubled the score in the 6th minute by Clutchie Macleod bravely deflected the ball away with his head. From the resultant corner a 15 yard strike from Blair Lawrie was well saved by James More.
Wick were trying hard but were unable to break through a stubborn Clach defence until the 24th minute when Gary Weir was held back setting up a set piece opportunity. However Richard MacAdies 25 yard free kick was blocked.
In a lively finish to the first half Ally Ridgers saved a Richard MacAdie free kick while Chris Ross fired over and Alex Bone was denied twice by saves from James More.
Wick started the second half well and David Cowie raced through the middle before firing a shot that was smuggled away from goals to howls of handball from the Scorries supporters.
Ally Ridgers then saved a Gary Weir header before Richard MacAdies overhead effort just cleared the Clach crossbar. At the other end Davie Ross headed the ball in for Chris Ross who hooked his effort over the bar as the match swung back and forth.
Alex Bone is always a danger and he demonstrated that in the 78th minute when his initial shot had to be blocked on the goalline before being cleared for a corner. From the set piece it was Bone again, this time with a header, and this time the post was to come to the Scorries rescue.
With time running out Clach clinched the win with a classically clinical finish from the veteran Daisy Ross, ensuring the Lilywhites will have an enjoyable journey south as their league position heads north.
