Lossie lose after an epic encounter 04-Sep-2004
Huntly face the long trip north to Wick to face a victorious Academy side that required extra time to beat Lossiemouth in a game that certainly lived up to it's Game of the Day tag.
Martin MacGregor opened the scoring for Wick in the 25th minute when a long throughball from the right by Gary Manson found it's way through MacGregor who placed it beyond Stevie Dunn from five yards
Lossie levelled the game on the half hour when a Simon Allan free kick from the left was lofted into the box. Shawn Scott rose to head down to his striker partner Darren Shalliker and he coolly slotted the ball low into the bottom right hand corner from 6 yards.
Then a stunning 2 minute spell saw three goals fly in with the game complexion of the game constantly changing. Lossie took the lead after some good individual play by David Hendry who's cross evaded everyone and left Simon Allan to tap in from 10 yards. Lossie struck again in the 37th minute when Lee Moir took the ball past three Wick defenders before lifting it over Don MacMillan from 6 yards.
Wick then pulled one back a minute later when Gavin Henderson picked the ball up 25 yards from goal before unleashing an unstoppable shot which flew into the top left hand corner giving Steve Dunn in the Lossie goal absolutely no chance.
The Scorries were back on level terms on the stroke of halftime when a cross from the left by Gary Manson found Gary Weir who headed back across goal into the far corner.
Ten minutes into the second half and Lossie regained their lead with the seventh goal in this remarkable match. A great through ball by Steve Ellis sent Shawn Scott clear and the ex Forres hitman kept his composure to side foot home past Don MacMillan from 10 yards.
However Wick sent the game into extra time when Gary Weir netted his second of the game with eleven minutes remaining. Neat play out wide by sub Martin Gunn saw him create the space to cross for Weir to score with a spectacular diving header.
Extra time saw the game continue in controversial circumstances. With only two minutes to go in the first period Wick were awarded a penalty to the fury of the Lossie players and fans alike.
Darren Shalliker, Shawn Scott and Stevie Dunn were all booked in the ensuing debate which seemed to upset Alan Sinclair who subsequently missed the spot kick. Almost immediately Shawn Scott was shown a second yellow for talking out of turn to referee Eric Robertson reducing Lossie to ten men.
Wick then sealed the game with the only goal in injury time. A cross from sub Colin Davidson appeared to be too long for Jamie Mackenzie but he managed to hook a volley into the back of the net to clinch a second round berth for the Scorries.
