Scorries sicked by late loss 14-Oct-2006
Inverurie Locos moved up onto the 16 point mark and back into the pulsing heart of the Scot Ads Highland League title race but they new that they had left Harmsworth Park a fortunate side having sneaked the win against a Wick side who deserved more than they got.
Wick grabbed an early lead only 2 minutes into the first half. A neat through ball from Martin Gunn found Richard MacAdie, his first time shot looked to be wide of the mark but Gary Weir beat the defender to the ball before he fired home from 6 yards.
Inverurie gave Wick an instant reply as Neil Gauld fired a cross deep into the box. The claim seemed easy for James More but at full stretch he dropped into his own net and the advantage was lost.
Ten minutes later Richard Shand picked up the ball deep before he drove down the right flank, he then superbly played in Kenny Coull who struck from 15 yards to give Locos the lead.
A Richard MacAdie cross from left was headed clear but only as far as Gary Farquhar who pulled off a fantastic first time volley which flew inches past Stewart Grays right hand post as the Scorries battled back.
Barry Somers came close on the half hour mark when he latched on to Neil Maclean cross but his header flew narrowly over the bar. Only minutes later a David Mowat cross to the back post found Richard MacAdie in space, his looping header flew inches over the bar as the game swung from end to end.
Just after the restart Wicks Gary Farquhar made space and struck a left foot shot but it was saved well by Stewart Gray. Gary Mansons shot from the left struck the post and was cleared to safety as Wick continued to press at the beginning of the second period.
A long ball out of defence found Gary Farquhar and his attempted lob landed on the roof of the net. On the hour mark Wick scored a disallowed goal. Richard Macadie lobbed Gray from 18 yards but was ruled offside.
In the 78th minutes David Cowie got to bye-line but was only partially cleared but Craig Shearer controlled well and fired into the inside of the post. The scores were level and it seemed Wick could go on to win, but there was to be a sting in the tail.
With eight minutes left on the clock a hopeful ball into the box was headed back into the danger area by Wick defender Stewart Ross and Jamie Watt showed that his long lay off hasnt dulled his predatory instincts as he fired home the winner.
In injury time a free kick was awarded as Gary Farquhar was brought down. He stepped up to narrowly fire wide and Wick had to settle for plaudits but no points.
