Wick Academy 1 v Huntly 2 at Harmsworth Park, Wick
Wick goal by Jamie MacKenzie
Report from www.highlandleague.net
Huntly got off to the perfect start with a goal in the third minute of the match. David Cowie's miss-timed pass that fell to Mark Gray and he netted with a low drive into the bottom corner of the net from eighteen yards out.
Two minutes later strike partners Richie Craig and Richie Taylor exchanged passes before Don Macmillan bravely dived at the feet of the former only for the ball to spill out to Taylor but his 6 yard effort was cleared off the line by Alec Lamb.
The Scorries first effort saw Martin Gunn hit a 25 yard shot that just skimmed past Richard Bowman's left hand post. Then Jamie Mackenzie nodded over the bar from 12 yards when he had been left unmarked.
In the 20th minute Martin Gunn received the ball 20 yards out and let fly with an effort that clipped the crossbar on its way over as Wick looked to level matters.
The woodwork was being tested at both ends with Richie Stainer, making his first start of the season, struck the left hand post with another well struck effort from outside the penalty area.
Huntly added a crucial second just five minutes after the break and once again the giant centre back Ross Campbell showed his confidence from the penalty spot
Richie Taylor's shot was charged down and when it came back to the striker he went down under the challenge of Craig Shearer. Campbell put the resultant spot kick to the keepers right.
Wick pulled one back on the 63rd minute through Jamie Mackenzie who skipped past his marker before dragging a low shot beyond Richard Bowman. This sparked an immediate reaction with Richie Taylor striking the cross bar within two minutes but it came to nothing more than that.
At the other end Andrew Macleod released Mackenzie whose first time driven ball across goal was just missed by sub Murray Coghill at the back post. Wick were keen to get back on level terms and had Huntly on the back foot at this stage.
Gary Manson then fed Martin Gunn who shot inches over the bar from 20 yards while Huntly nearly sealed their win on the counter attack with Gary McGowan's right foot drive requiring a fine save from Don MacMillan.
In the end it was all academic as Huntly held on to take all three points back down the road with them consolidating their position at the top of the Scot Ads Highland League table.
