One goal does the trick for Wick 27-Nov-2004 - Report from highlandleague.net
Wick Academy lifted themselves off of bottom place with a battling victory over Fort William despite having to play the majority of the game with ten men.
It was a lively opening to the game with great play from Gary Manson setting up the only goal of the afternoon in only the second minute. The cultured left footer opened the Fort defence before slipping the ball through for Steven Reid who chipped the helpless John Campbell from just outside the area.
However Wick's joy was short lived, as Paul McCallum was shown a red card for an off the ball incident that was unseen by virtually everyone in the ground except the referees assistant.
With over an hour to play this was a decision that was to have a huge bearing on the game as the Scorries looked to protect their lead with the aim of holding on to the ball when they got it and hitting Fort on the break.
Fort did their best to take advantage of the extra man but they came up against a goalkeeper and a defence in stubborn mood and try as they might they found it impossible to break through.
Indeed it was probably Wick that could have added to their tally with their eight shots on target and nine off outweighing Fort's five on and ten off, stats which indicate despite the lack of goals both sides gave their all.
In the end Wick took the points while both goalkeepers took tremendous credit from an entertaining afternoon and one that will lift the spirits in the Harmsworth dressing room.
