Wick let Buckie off the hook 04-Dec-2004
Having scored ten goals and not conceding one in their last two games Buckie Thistle came in as strong favourites and they very nearly took the lead in only the second minute of the game. Kevin Souter laid the ball into the path of Donnie Munro and he blasted a swerving effort which Don MacMillan did well to block with his legs.
Martin Gunn fired a warning shot with a 25 yard drive that Kevin Main blocked with his legs. This warning was not well heeded by the Jags as you will discover later in the half.
However in the meantime it was Buckie's turn to threaten. A flowing move that began with a long crossfield pass by Donnie Munro found Jamie Shewan on the left wing. He drove to the bye line before playing it back to John Coutts who wastefully blasted over the bar.
Gary Manson's corner came to Nigel Mackenzie at he edge of the box and his vicious snapshot flew inches past Kevin Mains goal. Then a superb move involving, Martin MacGregor, Craig Shearer, Gary Manson, and Steven Reid resulted in the latter testing Kevin Main.
Buckie fell behind in this clash seven minutes from the break, and what a goal it was. Gary Manson burst down the left hand side before playing a neat ball inside to Martin Gunn 30 yards from goal and with no Buckie player around him he took a touch before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the top right hand corner of the net giving Kevin Main no chance.
Buckie should have went in level when Paul Catto's cross picked out Jamie Shewan, free in the area but the big striker headed straight into the arms of Don MacMillan.
It could have been 2-0 when Martin MacGregor played it wide for Reid who fizzed the ball across goal, the ball flying agonisingly out of the reach of Nigel Mackenzie.
Don MacMillan proved his worth with an incredible stop in the 72nd minute when he dived full length to prevent a Mike Macdonald shot, that had been wickedly deflected from finding the back of the net.
It looked as though it would be a black day for the Green and Whites as Neil Davidson saw red for a shocking tackle from behind on Scorries playmaker Martin Gunn. However, ironically, this seemed to spur the Jags on.
With 14 minutes left on the clock Franny More's corner from the right was met by David Angus, out jumping two defenders to power a header beyond Don MacMillan from 10 yards.
Skipper Paul Lamberton struck the woodwork with a thunderbolt free kick but he was to find the back of the net in the 81st minute, this time from the penalty spot. The ball was played into the feet of John Coutts who spun Alan Sinclair who hauled the former Cove man to the deck. Lamberton stepped up and smashed it into the right hand corner of the net.
Salt was rubbed in Wick's wounds when Franny More galloped onto a dinked Donnie Munro through ball. More's shot was saved by MacMillan but Alan Sinclair miscued and played the ball straight to Mike Macdonald who delighted in what was an easy finish.
It was hard to take for the Scorries who looked home and hosed when the Jags were reduced to ten men but could this win have a galvanising effect on Duncan Shearer's side?
