Scorries scuttled in bizarre circumstances 23-Oct-2004
Forres Mechanics ran out winners but had to survive a couple of scares against a determined Wick Academy side who made the Can Cans battle hard before finally gifting them the points in a bizarre conclusion to the game.
Mark Holmes, in from the start, opened his account for Forres the second time around when he ran on to a Ryan Green throughball and despite physical contact with Alec Lamb which could have seen the Scorries awarded a free kick the former Clach and Buckie man ran on to slot past Alex Thomson from close ranger.
It was 2-0 just two minutes later when Charlie Brown's good work on the right lead to a cross being swung in which found Neil Whyte who composed himself before firing home from twelve yards
A mistake by Mike Morrison allowed Wick Academy back into the game after the break. Gary Weir collected it and then dodged around the covering defenders before slotting it home from eight yards out.
Forres then went up the other end and scored through imposing forward Ryan Green. The former Elgin City striker chased a lost cause and won the ball from Reid then drove to the by line and scored with an unbelievable effort that looped over the keeper and landed in the back of the net from what appeared to be an impossible angle.
Wick pulled themselves back into the game once again when Gary Weir swung the ball into the danger area and Martin Gunn made the third man run to apply the finish from 16 yards.
Substitute Charlie Rowley created what proved to be the crucial 6th of the game when he skipped past Alec Lamb and his cross in was flicked by the flailing Andrew Macleod, who had replaced the injured Alex Thomson in goals. Graeme Reid attempted to head the ball over the bar but only managed to head it into the roof of the net to take the pressure off the Mechanics.
In the final minute Andy Matheson added a fifth when he volleyed a Ryan Green head down from Charlie Rowley's cross into the roof of the net to add some icing to the cake.
