Sharks are spot-on for FHM cup challenge
A FOOTBALL team from Thurso which is raising money to attend a nationwide six-aside tournament sponsored by the magazine FHM has pledged to gift some of the cash raised from a sponsored penalty shoot-out to charity.
Sharks FC, who compete in the Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League, organised the fundraiser after the team qualified for next week's FHM O2 Cup challenge in Glasgow.
The shoot-out was due to take place after their game against Shadwell Town at Naver last night (Thursday).
Supporters were asked to guess how many goals the players would score from 150 penalty kicks. Half the money raised is to go towards the team's travelling expenses, while the other half will be split between the competition winner and a local charity.
Sharks, who are currently leading the second division of the local sevens league, are one of the 16 teams set to compete in the Scottish heat of the FHM O2 Cup at Glasgow Green on Monday night.
A total of 64 teams are competing in four regional heats for a place in the finals in London and a top prize of £5000.
Sharks' captain Chris Sinclair said: "All the lads are really looking forward to the competition because for so long we haven't won anything. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that should go down in Caithness football folklore."
As reported in Wednesday's Caithness Courier, the Thurso squad are believed to be the only side from the North of Scotland taking part in the nationwide competition and will tackle Sporting L e s b i a n, Sunday Night S l u t s and Charmin Smarmin Barmen in the group stage of the tournament.
