Comm one game away from clinching seven-a-side title
AFTER only two years in existence, Thurso Comm's seven-a-side team are set to become champions of the Ormlie Taxis first division.
Last year Comm seemed to peak when winning the second division crown, and the talk was of a fight against relegation this season. However, they now know that a victory over either Strokes or Naver in their last two games will see them lift the winners' shield - following in the footsteps of clubs such as Workshops, John O'Groats, Acks, Ashes and Castletown.
Of course, with many a wise head and more than a smattering of Highland Amateur Cup winners in the ranks, they will insist they're taking nothing for granted - but neutrals will be looking for Comm to clinch the title tonight (Friday), allowing them the celebration that their open style of football deserves.
Earlier this week the leaders fought out a tense 1-1 draw with Castletown.
Comm got off to a great start when Jocky Begg rifled the ball home after only four minutes. Stuart MacKenzie levelled just after the break and Gary Leonard then broke Castletown's hearts with save after save as the village team sought a winner.
Comm held out to claim a share of the points.
Naver raced into a two-goal lead against Pentland's youngsters, with Andrew Calder and Norman Foubister on the scoresheet.
Pentland got a lifeline through a sloppy own goal and they deservedly equalised through Gary Davidson.
But Naver had the final say when Keith Foubister struck late on to secure a 3-2 victory.
Lybster were given a lesson in the art of finishing by Swifts, who scored six without reply. Two-nil at half-time flattered Lybster and there was to be no let-up in the second period.
Malcolm Morrison and James Mills each got doubles, with Stevie Reid and Roddy Harper also on target.
Young Guns fell behind to Strokes when Des MacLeod blasted the ball into the net.
Young Guns had a penalty claim turned down but barely 60 seconds later Stephen Muir equalised with some help from his hand.
Dean Sallim then scored two well-taken goals to give Guns a 3-1 win, leaving Strokes staring at second division football next season.
Results - Ormlie Taxis first division:
Comm 1, Castletown 1; Naver 3, Pentland 2; Swifts 6, Lybster 0; Strokes 1, Young Guns 3.
