Clach killed by late Gunn shot 03-Feb-2007
Clachnacuddin saw their wait for a Scot Ads Highland League win continue this afternoon at home to a never-say-die Wick Academy side and the Merkinchers have now gone eight games without a win and have lost their last five matches.
Boss Dave Mackay opted for Bruce McCraw and Robbie Donaldson in attack while the Scorries arrived boosted by the return of Gary Farquhar to the starting line up and he made an instant impact.
The Clach defence failed to clear his fifth minute right hand side free kick, only for Gary Weir to slam the ball past Jim Calder. The 46 year old struggled to get down in time to prevent the ball hitting the back of the net.
Clachnacuddin responded to losing the goal and almost got back on level terms ten minutes later. Good link up play with Gary Ross and on-loan Ross County midfielder Scott Begg, allowed Robbie Duncanson a glimpse at goal. However the debut boy could watch on as his wicked shot swerved wide of James Mores right hand post.
Wick trouble maker Richard Macadie could have doubled the away sides lead just before the break. Clach left back Paul McLaren was nowhere to seen as Macadie found himself alone of the edge of the 18 yard box. But with all the time in the world the former County youngster shot at straight at Calder.
Lilywhites player/boss Dave MacKay rallied the troops at the break to try and salvage something in the second forty-five. He introduced Blair Lawrie to proceedings to get at a relaxed away rearguard.
The tricky winger was finally getting service to the frontmen who had been starved all afternoon. But to no avail, so top goal-scorer Alex Bone was sought for as Clach looked to get back into the game.
The veteran striker got involved straight away, coming close with a header from a near post corner. The home side were starting to get a strangle hold of the game now and finally tested James More in the Wick goal in the sixty-fifth minute.
Defender Steven MacDonald let fly from thirty yards but James More was equal to it although not looking entirely convincing. Both sides suffered injury nightmares during the second half. Clach were reduced to 10 men, after Dave MacKay limped off with a suspected broken ankle after landing awkwardly.
Academys Craig Shearer suffered a similar injury and had too be stretchered off the field of play after 78 minutes. The dynamic midfielder was taken straight to Inverness Raigmore Hospital after the game.
The away finally caved in to extreme Clach pressure conceding the equaliser with one minute remaining. Alex Bone stinging a wonder shot past James More from long range, as the whole of Grant Street Park breathed a huge sigh of relief.
However that was short lived as Wick battled back in stoppage time to take all three points northwards up the A9. Martin Gunn, the hero, sliding the ball past Calder as Clach were in disarray at the back.
