Academy teach Fort a lesson 05-Nov-2005
Wick Academy have won back to back matches since losing in the North of Scotland Cup semi final and with Fort William the visitors the home team were confident they could make it three in a row.
The first opening of the game came from a Gary Manson corner in the fourth minute. It fell for Graeme Reid and from twelve yards out he struck a left foot shot which was tipped away for another corner by Angus Hutchison.
At the other end a dangerous cross from teenager Davie Robertson saw Ryan Haggerty head the ball just past the right hand post to the relief of the home support.
Nigel Mackenzie picked the ball up in midfield and advanced before passing in to Jamie Mackenzie at the edge of the box and his right foot shot flew past Angus Hutchison and into the net just inside the keeper's left hand post.
It was two nil two minutes later. Nigel Mackenzie received the ball on the edge of the area and turned away from three defenders before firing it into the same spot as his brother had found to put the Scorries on their way to three in a row.
Wick, who had seen a Jamie Mackenzie effort ruled out, added a third before the half hour mark after good work down the right wing by David Cowie saw him deliver the ball in for Mackenzie who neatly laid it off to Gary Farquhar who right footed it into the same corner of the net once more.
Fort William grabbed a lifeline just a minute after the break. A free kick from the edge of the area saw David Robertson curl a left footed effort into the top right hand corner of the net leaving Don MacMillan helpless.
The visitors hope was soon extinguished though as Gary Farquhar grabbed his second. Jamie Mackenzie was the architect driving down the left wing before picking out the former St Johnstone midfielder and he drilled it past Angus Hutchison who had no hope of stopping this thunderbolt strike.
Wick went nap when Jamie Mackenzie controlled the ball, twisted and turned past a defender before chipping it up for his brother to net with a powerful header in the 72nd minute.
Martin Gunn netted his first goal of the season in the 80th minute when he ran onto a deep cross from David Cowie, sliding in to put it past Angus Hutchison. The scoring was not finished there and four minutes later Mark Nichol scored the eighth of the game.
A cross from Nigel Mackenzie saw Gary Weir's header cleared off the line by Michael Taylor but it fell to Jamie Mackenzie who crossed it in for Mark Nichol who side footed home from the angle of the box.
This result moves Wick up to within one point of Nairn County, the only other Highland side to have won their last three games while Fort remain stuck firmly at the bottom of the table.
