Cove took 1st half chances while Wick did not 06-Aug-2005 - from www.highlandleague.net
Cove Rangers recorded their first win of the season thanks to two goals in the first half at Harmsworth Park leaving Wick pointless from their first outing.
A Gary Manson throughball sent Nigel Mackenzie scampering into the penalty box. The striker then cut the ball back into the path of Gary Farquhar who drilled it low from 15 yards only for the outstretched leg of Grant Fraser to deflect it off the line and away from a corner.
Cove took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to the alertness of Chris Steel. Gary Clark set up Michael Ord and although his 20 yard effort was well saved by Don MacMillan diving across to his right the ball spun up for Steel to nod home from close range.
Wick had edged it in terms of possession and were creating openings but they could not take the chances when they were created however the same could not be said at the other end with Cove going two up in 34 mins.
A long throughball by Scott Fraser, played over the top of Academy defence allowed Michael Ord to nip in between the defenders to lob Don MacMillan from 15 yards out.
While the first half had been pretty evenly fought the second half saw the Toonsers take control of the game and they never looked in danger of losing their lead.
Five minutes after the interval a John Brown cross was met by Chris Steel who powered a header just wide of goal from 10 yards out. Michael Ord was the next to go close, intercepting a slack pass out of defence by Craig Shearer and forcing his way into the box before firing narrowly over the top of don Macmillan's cross bar.
Scott Fraser went even closer in the 69th minute, striking the outside of the Wick keeper's left hand post following a foray up the field while the best of the home side's chances saw Craig Shearer lay the ball back for Martin Gunn, who feinted to shoot before laying it on for Gavin Henderson who drove just over the bar form 25 yards.
