Wick move off the bottom - 12-Feb-2005 - report from www.highlandleague.net - by Alan Farquhar
With Inverurie Locos and Huntly both losing this was Clach's chance to force their way back into the title race. On paper they looked odds on to beat the bottom placed side however the underdogs bared teeth and come out the victors.
Clach had the ball in the net in the 13th minute only to see an offside flag spoil their celebrations. Gordon Morrison's cross was expertly volleyed into the net by Alex Bone from ten yards out but the striker was clearly offside.
The home side were the first to threaten. Andy Macleod played a sweet ball down the left wing that found Craig Shearer, his first time cross evaded Ally Ridgers and the Clach defence but there was no one on hand to convert the opening.
Academy took the lead in the 19th minute when Martin MacGregor fed Nigel Mackenzie, reinstated to the side having served his suspension, wasted no time in drilling the ball below Ally Ridgers from just inside the area.
It was 2-0 in 36 minutes when Craig Shearer's break from midfield was matched by the run of Martin Gunn and he was presented with a one-on-one with the Clach keeper. Ally Ridgers made the initial save from Gunn's left foot shot but the former Dundee United man followed up to fire home.
Clach dragged themselves back into the game two minutes before the break through Alex Bone. Colin Mitchell released Tony Low and the left winger's first time cross found the former Elgin City striker unmarked in the area and he sidefooted home from eight yards out.
Four minutes into the second half Nigel Mackenzie and Graeme Reid combined to give Martin Gunn a half chance but his first time effort from the edge of the area was well saved by Ally Ridgers.
On the hour mark another dangerous Gordon Morrison cross picked out Gary Ross. The big striker had time and space to pick his spot but he lobbed it over the bar form 10 yards.
An identical situation occurred at the other end just six minutes later and Nigel Mackenzie repeated Gary Ross's execution from Martin MacGregor's cross.
Wick sealed the win in the 76th minute when a long ball from Gavin Henderson saw Neil MacCuish slip leaving Martin Gunn to race on and fire the ball beyond Ally Ridgers to the delight of the bottom club's bench.
This win lifts Wick above Rothes, however Clach will look at the table tonight and ponder how different it would have looked had they claimed all three points.
