Amazing comeback by Keiss in 12-goal thriller
Published: 25 April, 2007
KEISS at the weekend staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in the 30-year history of the MacLeod IFA Highland Amateur Cup.
The odds were stacked against the Caithness second division side in the first half of their trip to play Lairg Rovers in the only preliminary tie in the North of the Dornoch Firth zone.
Young stand-in keeper Craig Banks had a torrid time of it, giving the hosts the lead after palming into his own goal and then being carried off with a dislocated shoulder and suspected broken collarbone after conceding three more.
A Ryan MacLean header and a raking shot from Neil MacDonald made it 3-0 within the opening five minutes. Kenny Fraser added a fourth midway through the first half shortly before Banks's enforced departure.
Right-back Gavin Cormack was posted between the sticks, with youngster Gordon Rosie coming off the bench.
Everything was going against the visitors, with Ben Taylor adding to their woes when he missed an early spot-kick after Graham MacNab had been floored in the penalty box.
Keiss looked destined for a drubbing when Fraser notched a fifth on the half-hour mark.
Keiss had missed a few chances before Graham MacNab netted just before the break. A goal by his twin brother Grant 10 minutes after the break hinted at nothing more than the visitors' bid to go down with a bit of a fight. Even that hope looked forlorn when Fraser cashed in on a defensive blunder to register his hat-trick and make it 6-2.
The younger Keiss side, with James Cormack directing traffic from midfield, had the bulk of the play in the second half and went on to claw their way back into the tie.
Goals by Graham MacNab and Rosie in quick succession had Rovers reeling and Graham's hat-trick goal from the penalty spot with 15 minutes left made it 6-5.
Five minutes later, a fine move was completed by Grant MacNab to level the scores.
In a breathless finale, both sides were denied clear scoring opportunities by marginal offside decisions.
A late winner would have been harsh on the victims, with both sides deserving the opportunity of a rematch in Keiss on Saturday.
The winners will earn a home tie versus John O'Groats in the first round of the tournament.
