Mowat goal a blow for Brora 20-Jan-2007
Wick Academy picked up the three points that lifts them on to thirteen points where they are sandwiched between todays opponents Brora Rangers and last weeks, Forres Mechanics, with only goal difference separating the three teams.
Early on it was Brora who came closest to scoring when an inswinging corner from the right caused panic in the defence in what can only be described as atrocious conditions. Wick failed to clear their lines and allowed Ian Innes to smack a shot off the base of the post.
A long ball, wind assisted, found its way into Wicks box. James More came racing out off his line but it fell to Sam Mackay whos first time shot was cleared off the line by Andrew Macleod.
At the other end Wick created one real opening in the half when a Stuart Ross free-kick out on the left found Craig Shearer on the edge of the box, Shearer then evaded some tackles and unleashed a shot which flashed past the post.
With the second half well underway Brora had a gilt edged opportunity to get that all important opener. Ricky Wardrop was clear on the goal, his first time shot rippled into the side netting.
It wasnt long after until Wick took the lead. Shane Sutherland received the ball and his shot was knocked round the post for a corner. From the resulting corner Michael Gray was caught flapping as he knocked the ball into the ground and from 6 yards David Mowat headed the ball into the roof of the net.
In reply John Colquhoun picked the ball up 20 yards from goal and unleashed driven shot which was well saved by the legs of James More and cleared by the defence. It was to be a vital save as it ensured Peter Budge rounded off his short stint in charge with a win.
The final chance of the game almost saw the Scorries give themselves some added security. It came when Craig Shearer sent Shane Sutherland through and under pressure he fired his shot wide of Michael Grays post.
