Cans battle back for a draw 06-Jan-2007
Wick made the long journey south to Mosset Park in somewhat chilly and damp conditions and the match mirrored the conditions in that it never really warmed up although there were four goals and one red card.
Forres had their first opportunity to score in the fourth minute when they took a short corner on the left to Charlie Brown who skinned the full back before firing and outside of the foot effort into the side of the net.
The home side were to rue the missed attempt as in the 7th minute Wick took the lead. Richard Macadie burst through the midfield and played a short pass to the onrushing Gary Weir who fired low past Calder from around 10 yards.
A few minutes later Forres put together a superb passing move. Scott Matheson turned in the middle of the park and played a great pass down the standside line to Justin Rogers. The pacy winger fired a low cross across the area which Gary McDonald fired wide when coming in at the back post at pace.
Just after the 25th minute the home side drew level. Hamish Munro attempted to turn in the 6 yard box but was tackled. The ball bounced about before spinning high into the air. Rogers was on hand to then volley emphatically home when the ball made its way back towards the ground.
With half time approaching Wick almost put themselves back in front. Gary Manson danced into the box and fired a chest height ball across the box. A Wick striker attempted to blast it home but Hamish Munro was on hand to make a superb block with Calder looking helpless. The ball then fell kindly to Wick but Chris Ross was on hand to stand strong and block the second attempt.
The tall defender was called into action again when goalscorer brought down a cross at the back post and just as he was about to pull the trigger Ross nicked the ball of his toes to thwart and almost definite goal.
Half Time: Forres Mechanics 1 Wick Academy 1
Forres came out of the blocks the faster of the two sides and both Garry McDonald and Justin Rogers had good efforts thwarted. Then on the hour mark Rogers and Scott Moore both had efforts following a stramasch in the Wick penalty area.
However it was Wick that go their noses back in front. There was a lack of communication between the keeper and Tony Ross which ended in Ross toeing the ball past his onrushing keeper, into the path of David Cowie who gleefully fired the ball into the empty net.
With 20 minutes remaining it was another defensive/goalkeeping error that allowed Forres to draw level. On this occasion it was Charlie Brown who was the happy recipient of the opportunity as he fired the ball into the corner of the net.
A further disaster happened for the visitors when they had their full back sent off for a second bookable offense.
Both sides made changes in an attempt to win the game and it looked like the Forres changes were going to be the most effective as they continually pushed Wick back.
With 14 minutes remaining Simon Allan had a good free kick parried over the bar by James More and with 7 minutes left on the clock Rogers stung the cross bar with a rasping drive from range.
