Sanders ends his fifteen-year jinx
John O'Groats 0, Rovers 2
Published: 09 August, 2006
A JUBILANT Wick Rovers celebrated their first triumph in the David Allan Shield on Saturday.
After a goal-less first half at Harmsworth Park, a majestic volley from Paul MacDonald had them ahead with victory sealed by an injury time strike by Stevie Reid. The win is a deserved first county honour for Sanders Harper, in his 15th season in charge of the club.
For the second time this season, he broke off a family holiday to be with his troops — the sort of commitment which all too often is missing among the current generation of players.
Like counterpart Robbie Swanson, he was without a handful of regulars on Saturday, with Alan Sinclair and Dean Salim prominent among the absentees.
The village outfit were perhaps harder hit with Stuart Sinclair (the elder) and Derek Munro at weddings and Kevin Swanson and John Banks also away.
There were few thrills for the decent-sized crowd in a scrappy first half when both sides played below par.
The first sniff in front of goal came for JOG after two minutes when Martin Sinclair could not get the connection he wanted as he raced in to meet a free-kick.
Rovers’ first attempt came on 16 minutes with a raking 20-yard volley from Bryan McKiddie which flew just over.
After 21 minutes, the village side went close when Martin Sinclair’s header from David Green’s hanging free-kick was punched by Kevin McGee.
Sean Henstridge then homed in on goal but was forced too wide to get a shot on goal.
Rovers’ appeal for a penalty after 28 minutes was rejected by referee Bob Gun who reckoned Reid went down too easily.
Colin Sinclair, who was to receive the man-of-the-match award, was prominent in midfield where he was the architect of most of his side’s counters.
JOG’s bright start faded as Rovers finished the half on the front foot.
After 31 minutes, Sinclair tested Henderson with a 30-yarder before an Angus Mackay corner broke to Lee Lyall who fired just over from the edge of the box.
The first yellow card was shown on 53 minutes to JOG’s Michael Steven for one too many fouls.
A minute later, Rovers went close when Colin Sinclair’s lay-off at a free-kick saw Davidson’s rocket shot just miss the target, with Henderson struggling to get to it.
With Henstridge a tireless worker up front, JOG always looked dangerous on the counter-attack.
Wick Rovers joint captains Steve Muir (left) and James Robertson, along with Donald Allan, son of the late David Allan, hold aloft the David Allan Shield.
The striker went close on 66 minutes with a header from a looping cross from Steven.
The villagers continued a mini-purple patch when Steven latched on to a crossfield pass from Green but was unable to find the target with his shot.
At half-time, both camps believed the team that scored first would go on to win.
JOG therefore feared the worst after 72 minutes when they fell behind.
Sub Andrew Weir did the spadework down the left flank with his cross met on the half-volley by MacDonald whose spanking effort flashed past Henderson into the far corner of the net.
JOG thereafter adopted an all-out attacking formation and it almost paid off when a 78th raid saw Henstridge’s curling effort from outside the box shave past McGee’s left-hand post.
Three minutes from time, Rovers’ sub Andrew Banks missed a snip when he failed to convert an unopposed header from McKiddie’s corner.
McGee earned his corn at the other end when he tipped over Green’s raging 25-yard shot with a minute remaining.
A minute into injury time, Rovers made sure of the outcome when McKiddie sent Reid romping through on goal to finish with a left-footed finish.
Colin Davidson became the second man booked late on in what was a well-tempered match.
It gave Rovers a victory they deserved on the back of a campaign which has seen them establish themselves as one of the top teams in the county.
This is the third season in a row that JOG have lost out in a cup final but it will surely not be long before the former pub team whipping boys will win their first county honour.
