Inverness Clach 3 V Wick Academy 3
Wick goals by Gary Farquhar (2) (1 pen) and Mark Nicholl
report from http://www.highlandleague.net:-
Thrills, spills and goals a plenty 03-Jan-2006
The Lilywhites "owed the fans a performance" Rod Houston said after the defeat at Nairn last week and they certainly meant business in the early stages on this one. Gordon Morrison had a free kick charged down as they applied some early pressure.
The fans didn't have long to wait for the opener and it came in the 10th minute. Davie Ross ran down the right hand side and crossed for Sean Kerr who, from two yards, couldn't miss and he duly slotted the ball home.
Wick equalised in the 24th minute when a Nigel Mackenzie corner from the right was met by Craig Shearer. His header came back off the bar and while confusion reigned in nipped Gary Farquhar to put his old head no the ball, nodding home from two yards out.
Five minutes later it was 2-1 to Clach. Blair Lawrie's raid down the right wing lead to a fine cross that was met by the towering Davie Ross who bulleted the ball past Don MacMillan.
There was a chance at both ends of the park in the space of 15 seconds. It began with Murray Coghill's run and cross down the right that very nearly set Gary Farquhar free but when the interception was made Clach broke and at the end of the move Bruce McCraw struck an effort over the bar from ten yards out. Eight minutes before the break a Jamie Fraser throughball set Bruce McCraw free but the veteran struck the keeper's left hand post before the ball was cleared for a corner.
The final chance of the half saw Murray Coghill's delivery from the right met by Paul McCallum but his effort flew past Ally Ridgers' right hand post.
Wick levelled early in the second period when a Craig Shearer cross from the right found Mark Nichol, in space, inside the six yard box and he easily slotted home. They then took the lead when Blair Lawrie pushed Gary Weir who was set to get on the end of another Craig Shearer ball in from the left. The linesman's flag went up and the referee pointed to the spot.
Gary Farquhar stepped up to place it into the top left hand corner of the net to put Wick ahead for the first time in the game. Clach didn't take long to level and it came from striker turned defender Gary Ross.
Gordon Morrison's ball into the box caused consternation and when it eventually came out to Ross he battered it back goalwards and somehow it made it all the way through past a ruck of defenders and keeper Don MacMillan.
In the end both teams will feel they deserved something from the game which was a true six goal thriller.
