Nairn County 5 v Wick Academy 2 at Station Park, Nairn
Wick goals by Nigel MacKenzie and Graeme Reid
report from http://www.highlandleague.net:-
Nairn are five alive 12-Nov-2005
Nairn County continued where they left off a fortnight ago when they lifted the North of Scotland Cup as they defeated Wick Academy at Station Park to end the Scorries three game winning run.
The home side went close to breaking the deadlock after seven minutes of play as an Iain Brooks flick on sent Johnny Seaton racing in on goal but his early shot was held by Wick goalkeeper Don MacMillan.
A minute later the visitors themselves went close to opening the scoring as Nigel Mackenzie’s first time shot from 20-yards was held by Jim Calder in the Nairn goal.
But County did take the lead after nine minutes. Scott Kellacher played a high free-kick forward from the centre circle that hung in the air perfectly for Iain Brooks to powerfully head across the keeper and into the corner of the net.
The hosts doubled their lead three minutes short of the half-hour mark as Willie Barron latched onto a Seaton throughball before lashing home a right-foot shot from 10-yards.
It was three for the home side seven minutes later. Brooks bust a gut to prevent a long ball from going out for a throw-in on the right and got his just rewards as he knocked it past the last defender before finishing with aplomb with the outside of his right foot.
County could have made it four before the break as Seaton teed up Brian Macleod whose first time shot from 20-yards flew just over the crossbar.
Wick went close to pulling one back a minute short of the break as David Cowie broke free down the right and saw his 22-yard shot sail just past the post.
Half Time: Nairn County 3 Wick Academy 0
Nairn notched a fourth goal nine minutes into the second half to further increase their lead. Barron’s cross from the right was met on the volley by the unmarked Tony Low at the back post and he lashed home his first goal for the club.
County made it five in the 59th minute as the roof threatened to cave in for the visitors. Duncan Jones’ corner from the left was headed goalwards by Low and diverted past MacMillan by the outstretched leg of Barron.
Wick almost snatched a goal back six minutes later when Nigel Mackenzie curled a left footed shot from 22-yards just over Calder’s crossbar.
They did grab one back however after 71 minutes. Nigel Mackenzie was free in the box to control a long ball into the box and he made no mistake as he smashed the ball past Calder from 10-yards.
This goal gave the visitors a new leash of life and they almost got their second goal of the day seven minutes later. Martin Gunn’s powerful effort from 20-yards was tipped over the bar by Calder.
A minute later though, Graeme Reid did get Wick’s second goal. A Don Cowie corner from the right was met by Gary Manson who saw two shots blocked before the ball broke to Reid for him to stab home.
County almost finished with a flurry by scoring a sixth goal eight minutes from time. A Barron free-kick into the box from the right was headed clear but only as far as Low whose first time, left-footed effort whistled past the post.
