Scot Ads Highland League - 01 10 2005
###########################
Keith 1 v Wick Academy 0 at Kynoch Park, Keith - 3 p.m
report from http://www.highlandleague.net:-
Still wins it for Keith 01-Oct-2005
Keith moved back up to 7th thanks to a 1-0 win in what was a very evenly fought match at Kynoch Park. The Maroons had to utilise their squad in the absence of centre back pairing Kris Niddrie and Derek Nicol and that meant a rare run out for Darren Stephen.
On the other hand Wick were along their usual lines and it showed in the early stages with the Scorries stringing together some well worked moves however there was little in the way of goalmouth action throughout the first half.
Just after the half hour Jamie Mackenzie raced onto a throughball leaving home defence in his wake but fortunately for the home side he was halted in his tracks by an offside flag. Gary Farquhar then nodded a Gary Manson corner narrowly past the post as Wick looked to seize the initiative.
The first real save of note came just three minutes before the break Andy Shearer stand his ground to punch away a Gary Farquhar drive from 12 yards out, ensuring the first half ended goal less.
Don MacMillan's first real save of the game came after an incredible 57 minutes, deflecting Gary Nicol's netbound effort around the post after Darren Still had created the opening.
Minutes later Keith took the lead. Stuart Walker cut the ball back for Darren Still and he sidestepped two challenges before firing it into the roof of the net from 12 yards out.
This seemed to lift the home side and the Maroons skipper again went close with a 20 yard effort that grazed the paint off Don MacMillan's crossbar on the 68th minute. Next to go close was Alan Fraser who saw his low free kick tipped around the post by MacMillan at full stretch.
At the other end Andy Shearer had to look lively to tip a Nigel Mackenzie 15 yard effort over the bar as Wick went in search of an equaliser. In the end it was not to be and even though they had a late shout for a penalty turned away the home side would have been delighted to pick up the three points.
