Brora Rangers 1 V Wick Academy 3 at Dudgeon Park, Brora
Brora bow out after half time! 17-Sep-2005 - report from www.highlandleague.net
Brora Rangers came into this match knowing they had to beat Wick Academy in order to progress to the semi finals of the UMAX North of Scotland Cup with any other result seeing the Scorries through.
There was little in the way of goalmouth action in the opening stages of this match with Brora the first to threaten. In the seventh minute Aaron smith drove through the heart of the Wick defence before slipping the ball into the path of Mark Kennedy however the striker's shot from 10 yards was blocked by the feet of Don MacMillan.
Wick seemed to be coming into the game as the half progressed and Martin Gunn let fly from all of 30 yards was well saved by home keeper Michael Gray. However Wick were to find themselves a goal down shortly after the half hour. Recent signing Connor Campbell's deft lob was touched onto the crossbar by Don MacMillan however it feel for Mark Kennedy, who was first on the scene and he netted with ease from close range.
Don MacMillan had to then pull off a fantastic save to deny Shane Sutherland who cut in from the left to test the keeper and then a swirling cross from Mark Kennedy again called the MacMillan in to action, tipping the ball over the bar shortly before the break.
Wick came out for the second half looking a changed team and they levelled just a minute into the second half. A Nigel Mackenzie cross lead to a goalmouth scramble that saw Jamie Mackenzie collect the ball with his back to goal but his opportunistic effort was blocked back to Gary Farquhar who then shot across goal only for it to hit Jamie Mackenzie who deflected it home wrong footing Michael Gray.
The Academy sealed their passage into the semi finals of the UMAX North of Scotland Cup thanks to a late double by former Brora Rangers midfielder Gary Farquhar.
The first began when David Cowie took a long pass from Martin Gunn in his stride and when Gary Farquhar raced from midfield the ball was squared to him and from 18 yards he sidefooted it into the corner of the net to the keepers right.
In the dying moments Nigel Mackenzie swung in the ball which Gary Farquhar controlled before steadying himself and netting firing home from fifteen yards to round off a fine second half performance.
