Scorries are Nichol plated 18-Mar-2006 - report from www.highlandleague.net
A four goal salvo from Mark Nichol has set the battle for 11th spot on fire as Wick, Lossiemouth and Rothes go into the final few weeks of the season level on 22 points.
Wick took the lead in the 7th minute when a throughball by Gary Weir found Mark Nichol in the box and he wasted no time in shooting it low past stand in keeper Steven Thomson, picking out the bottom right hand corner of the net.
It should have been two nil to the Scorries ten minute later after a Gavin Henderson cross looked bound for the head of Mark Nichol until he was pushed. The ref pointed to the spot but Gary Farquhar failed to make it count with the veteran being denied by keeper Steven Thomson.
Rothes got themselves back on level terms in the 31st minute. A free kick from the corner of the area was taken by Brian Thomson who floated the ball invitingly into the path of Allan Stephen who headed home from three yards out.
However the Scorries went right up the field and scored. A throughball by Craig Shearer found Mark Nicholl in the area and with a goal under his belt already he had the composure to put Wick back into the lead.
By the time the 35th minute had rolled round it was 3-1 and Nichol had completed his hat trick. This time Gary Weir released Nigel Mackenzie down the left and his low cross was met on the half volley by the young striker who completed his hat trick with aplomb.
Mark Nichol's afternoon just kept getting better as he added a fourth two minutes after the break. A low cross by Nigel Mackenzie allowed the on form striker to tap into a virtually open net.
Rothes did claim a late consolation goal to round off the afternoon with George Massie taking full advantage of a loose ball to net with a cool finish in the final minute of the match. It was too little too late as the Scorries ran out the victors.
