Wick Academy 1 v Brora Rangers 2 at Harmsworth Park, Wick
report by Alan Farquhar for www.highlandleague.net :-
Wick fall to Sutherland rivals 15-Jan-2005
###########################
Brora Rangers claimed their first win of the season at Harmsworth Park in a typically tight game between the two Highland clubs.
The opening chance of the game fell for the visitors when Martin Macdonald found space at the edge of the area and fired a shot that flew across the boughs of Don MacMillan, but failed to find the bottom corner.
Two minutes later Gary Manson swung the ball into the box for Paul McCallum and his goalbound header was only diverted by a last ditch headed clearance by Muir Morton, back covering for his keeper.
Martin Macdonald continued to look dangerous for Brora and he sprung the offside trap to scamper clear but Don MacMillan stood up well to the striker and tipped his low effort around the post.
The breakthrough in this game finally came six minute after the break, and it came for the visitors. A Mark Kennedy cross found Neil Calder breaking form midfield and he half volleyed the ball beyond MacMillan from 12 yards out.
MacMillan had to look lively again in the final minute of the half when he raced off his line to take the ball off Macdonald's foot, however the keeper then gave possession up to Mark Kennedy who strolled forward before firing wide from 18 yards.
Brora doubled their advantage when a Mark Kennedy cross allowed Martin Macdonald to pick up the ball, skipping past a couple of challenges and shooting only to see his effort save but the he rebound fell kindly for the Cattach who shot into the bottom left hand corner from twelve yards.
Wick gave themselves a glimmer of hope with only minutes left when a high ball into the box was left by the Brora defence in anticipation of Michael Rae coming to collect but Craig Shearer nipped in to slot home.
The glimmer did not turn into anything more than that at Brora held on to the delight of those who had made the trip up the long and winding road.
