Wick Academy 1 v 2 Fraserburgh at Harmsworth Park, Wick
Wick goal by Martin Gunn
Report from Highland League.net website :-
Wick close but no cigar 11-Dec-2004 report by Alan Farquhar
Fraserburgh moved back into top spot but they were made to work all the way for their win against an ever improving Wick side at Harmsworth Park
An audacious effort from Broch winger Gavin Wemyss very nearly gave the visitors an early lead. From all of 30 yards he saw that Don MacMillan was off his line and lofted one goalwards only to see Alan Sinclair cover round in time to head the ball away.
Gavin Wemyss went closer two minutes later when his turn and shot from just inside the box struck the cross bar and went back into the hands of goalkeeper Don MacMillan.
After a slow start in 2nd from top versus 2nd from bottom Fraserburgh took the lead on 19 minutes. A Mark Cowie corner from the left hand side was partially cleared by Don MacMillan only to fall at the feet of Ian Murray who coolly lobbed the keeper from twelve yards.
Wick's first chance of the match was sandwiched in between the two Broch goals. Nigel Mackenzie intelligently fed Martin Gunn who rounded the keeper, being forced wide in the process, before lobbing the ball into the area for Gary Weir but James Geddes was on hand to clear the ball off the goal line
There was barely time for Wick to catch their breath before Fraserburgh doubled their advantage. Wick again failed to deal with an attack down the left hand side, this time it was Russell McBride causing the problems and his cross found goalscorer Murray who unselfishly headed the ball down to strike partner Mike Stephen who drilled the ball past MacMillan from twelve yards.
The game settled down after two quick goals by Fraserburgh and nothing could separate the teams until just before the break. Wick pulled a goal back after superb vision by Nigel McKenzie who played in Martin Gunn who kept his composure to slip the ball through Billy Gordon's legs from ten yards.
Both sides then went on to battle for what was sure to be the crucial fourth goal but despite both sides having openings the score remained 1-2 and the Broch returned to the top of the table.
