MacIntosh's hat-trick gets Naver off to a winning start
NAVER United gave warning that they are not in the first division just to make up the numbers with a 3-0 win over fellow newcomers Lybster on the opening night of the Caithness Amateur Sevens Football League. Robbie MacIntosh's hat-trick was the difference between the sides as Lybster struggled in their first game on Astroturf this year.
Naver opened the scoring after a slick passing move carved open the Lybster defence and MacIntosh fired the ball home.
The village side then had goalkeeper Stewart Cumming to thank for a great stop just before the interval.
In the second half Lybster pressed for what would have been a deserved equaliser only to be hit with a lethal counterattack. Once again MacIntosh was on hand to finish off a sweeping move with a fine header after Cumming had blocked his first effort.
The third goal was simply the icing on the cake for Naver as Lybster were sent home with nothing to show for their efforts.
Castletown kicked off the Ormlie Taxis first division and found out it is going to be hard for them to retain the title they have won over the past two seasons. They have lost a few players to Halkirk United in the North Caledonian League but still managed to field a strong line-up for the opener against a young Pentland Atlanta side.
It was an even affair with defences on top. Pentland broke the deadlock after a fine passing move that saw John MacLeod's shot hit the back of the net via an upright.
Daryl MacAlpine then had a brave pointblank save to prevent Pentland moving further clear, and 1-0 was how it finished.
Young Guns started brightly against Thurso Comm and a net-bound shot by Terry Cannop was blocked on the line.
Willie Steven then had a cracking turn and shot that flashed just wide.
Young Guns opened the scoring when Paul MacDonald found himself in the clear and clinically finished it off. Paul Reid then had the save of the night when he brilliantly turned over a Jocky Begg thunderbolt.
From the resultant corner Willie Steven cracked a shot off the crossbar.
The game was finished as a contest five minutes into the second half when the Comm defence went to sleep and Young Guns scored three goals in the space of a minute. They still battled hard, though, and got a late consolation when Steven found his shooting boots and fired a shot under the diving Reid.
Swifts managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in a match they led for so long. The opener was disappointing for Strokes - the keeper came out to clear a long through ball and succeeded only in thumping it off young Colin MacDonald and into the back of the net.
At this point Swifts deserved their lead and James Mill was unlucky to see his netbound shot hit a rut and bobble wide.
Strokes came more into the match in the second half and levelled through Des Macleod with seven minutes remaining.
Swifts were then caught out by a late sucker punch, Despy Mackay snatching the winner with seconds remaining.
Results: Castletown 0, Pentland 1; Naver 3, Lybster 0; Thurso Comm 1, Young Guns 4; Swifts 1, Strokes 2.
