Inverurie Locos 3 v Wick Academy 0 at Harlaw Park, Inverurie - 15.00 k.o
Report from Highlandleague.net:-
Locos move into second 18-Sep-2004
Inverurie Locos dominated today’s match at Harlaw Park against Wick Academy claiming all three points to climb up to second place in the Highland League.
It was the home side who began the game promisingly and after only five minutes Neil McLean managed to run at the Wick defence before unleashed a dipping strike which flew just over young goalkeeper Kevin McGee’s crossbar.
The Locos had another chance to open the scoring after thirteen minutes when Kenny Coull’s shot dribbled past a virtually open goals with the Wick keeper beaten. Three minutes the Locos almost took the lead again after Richie Singer’s cross was met by the head of Mark Simpson but his bulleted effort flew over the bar. It seemed only a matter of time before the opener arrived and sure enough it did on the twentieth minute.
Kenny Coull’s driving run down the right flank saw him cut inside and create space for a strike, his cross-shot was poked into the goals on the line by the unlucky Craig Shearer who was attempting to clear.
Scott Taylor almost doubled the Locos lead on twenty eight minutes when Neil McLean’s weighted ball left him free in the box, but he took too long to adjust his feet and Kevin McGee smothered the ball.
Tommy Wilson did make it 2 - 0, minutes before half time after a brilliant spell of passing left him with a chance outside the box. It started with Steven Park’s weighted ball forward to Stuart McKay who set up Wilson just outside the box who drove the ball into the top left corner.
Half Time: Inverurie Locos 2 - Wick Academy 0
The Locos came out for the second half in mind to carry on from the end of the first half as inside of the first minute of the second half McKay’s run down the right flank left space for a cross, which flicked goalwards by Kenny Coull but it was well saved by McGee.
After fifty three minutes Wick had their best scoring chance of the game as Alex Lamb’s pass to Nigel Mackenzie on the outside of the box was met by a shot, which was screwed just wide.
On seventy six minutes the home supporters were cheering once again after a wonder strike by substitute Ritchie Davidson. It was Coull who laid the ball for the midfielder outside the box and "Titchy" met it to unleash a beautiful strike, sending the ball straight into the top right corner.
After an enterprising spell from the visitors which promised much but failed to deliver in the final third the Locos had their final attempts in the 85th minute with Kenny Coull’s shot from the right flank striking the far post before bouncing wide.
Final Score: Inverurie Locos 3 - Wick Academy 0
