Wick win out in dramatic circumstances 14-Sep-2004
Wick Academy scored in the 96th minute to seal their place in the semi final's of the Caledonia Broadband North of Scotland Cup and once again Gary Weir proved to be the hero extending his goalscoring streak to a goal in each of his last three matches.
There was drama even before the kick off with Wick keeper Don MacMillan, who was set to return from a suspension that ruled him out of the weekend defeat at the hands of Huntly, injured himself in the warm up.
Young keeper Kevin McGee, who had deputised for Don on Saturday was working at the local swimming pool and his name was added to the list of subs but with his arrival not coming until the start of the second half Alec Lamb donned the gloves, and wore them throughout the ninety minutes.
In fairness to Lamb he had little to do but he certainly had to pick the ball out of the net in the 24th minute when Shane Sutherland buried the ball from only six yards out to give the visitors a surprise lead.
Golspie battled on manfully against mounting pressure from the home side and in the 58th minute the tension on the field finally boiled over. Paul McCallum, making his first start since breaking his leg, and Darren Pullen came to blows and were both sent for an early bath by referee Jason Hasson.
Hasson was again a key figure just eight minutes later when he awarded Wick Academy a penalty when the fast feet of Gary Manson lured in Gary Benson who felled the left footer just inside the area.
Martin Gunn strode up and fired the ball straight down the middle and with Iain Young diving it meant the scores were level.
Wick could now smell the semi finals in front of them and they pushed on in the search of what seemed to be an elusive winner. Golspie keeper Iain Young performed heroics however the North Caledonian side finally crumbled in the sixth minute of seven extra minutes added on to the end of regulation time.
Gary Manson's corner was met by Gary Weir, who had hit the post ten minutes earlier, and he headed the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the homesters and the despair of the visitors.
Wick will now keep an eager eye on tomorrow night's match between Forres Mechanics and Elgin City with one of those two sides their likely opponents in the semi final stage.
